Volkswagen now the biggest car company in the world – Toyota number two
Volkswagen is now the world’s largest carmaker. This is the first time the company has achieved this place in the market, Toyota has moved back into second place.
Toyota’s sales of 10.175 million last year are less than the combined sales from the VW group of 10.31 million. In spite of the emissions scandal, which has caused real problems for the company, VW has performed well in China. It has even sold more cars in Sweden than Volvo.
General Motors is not expected to have sold more than the top two companies. Its sales figures will be released next week.
What was Toyota’s position in the car-makers’ league table? What problem for VW makes this result even more impressive? Why has VW been so successful?
